First Monday In May: The Best Met Gala Style Moments
It’s the first Monday in May, which traditionally means it’s Met Gala time in New York City. The iconic event was first launched in 1948 as a philanthropic evening to raise money for The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s newly-founded Costume Institute and mark the opening of its annual exhibit. Currently helmed by Vogue’s Anna Wintour, The Met Gala is considered “fashion’s biggest night out” and the most glamorous celebration of the year. But due to Covid-19 and social distancing measures, this year’s posh party has been postponed (a new date is still TBD). While we won’t have any new grand-entrance photos to obsess over tonight, we’re still getting in the Met Gala mood with a look back at some of our favorite style moments from over the years, below.
Other ways to get your Met Gala fix? Tune into Vogue’s livestream celebration, “A Moment With the Met,” on YouTube at 6 pm EST tonight. We’ll also be reliving all of the magic of the Met Gala by rewatching the 2016 documentary, “The First Monday in May,” which follows Anna Wintour and Andrew Bolton, the Met’s Costume Institute curator, as they bring the annual exhibit and gala to life. For more Met Gala goodness, take a look back at recent galas and a preview of this year’s About Time exhibition, which has been rescheduled to open on October 29, 2020.
