Currently Reading: "Conversations With Friends" by Sally Rooney
I started this novel a few months ago and finally finished the last few pages (took a break between chapters to read a few other books—more on those to come). “Conversations With Friends” is Irish author Sally Rooney’s debut novel, which follows the relationships of four people: Frances (the narrator), Bobbi (her best friend), and Melissa and Nick (a married couple). If you’re a fan of Rooney’s other popular book, “Normal People,” then you’ll likely enjoy this novel too.
There are some similarities in both stories, including the Dublin setting and Trinity College backdrop; an aloof but alluring female protagonist who struggles with feelings of self-worth and a messy family life; an attractive male character who struggles with his own inner turmoil; and a complicated love story that’s anything but perfect.
While I gobbled up “Normal People” in a matter of nights (with tears streaming down my face), and equally devoured the incredible TV adaption on Hulu, I found “Conversations With Friends” to be a much slower yet still enjoyable read. The book is also being made into a TV series debuting in 2022, and starring Joe Alwyn, Sasha Lane, and Jemima Kirke (aka Jessa from GIRLS). Fingers crossed the show is as beautifully produced as “Normal People.”
