Currently Watching: "Bridgerton" on Netflix
We spent the holiday break binge-watching ”Bridgerton” on Netflix, a delightful and delectable romp of a series that’s guaranteed to heat up your dreary January. Set to a hummable soundtrack of pop songs reimagined as classical renditions, and narrated by dame Julie Andrews as the local gossip Lady Whistledown, Bridgerton is a modern, witty period drama that’s equal parts soap opera and romantic comedy.
Based on the regency romance novels by Julia Quinn, heaving bosoms and bare chests abound, and the show has its fair share of steamy love scenes between debutant Daphne Bridgerton, played by Phoebe Dynevor, and the Duke of Hastings, played by Regé-Jean Page (including a somewhat controversial scene in episode 6).
But the hunky Duke isn’t the show’s only eye candy: the endless parade of elegant ball gowns, decorative interiors, and real-life English castles and residences (including the wisteria-draped Bridgerton home, which we’re dying to visit!) all provide an indulgent visual feast and escape. We’re already jonesing for season 2!
